July 2025
We’re delighted to welcome Japanese musician and sound artist Manami Kakudo for a short residency at Modja Modja House from 15 to 18 July 2025.
During her stay, Manami will be developing new work through local research and creative exchange.
Manami Kakudo is a musician and sound artist based in Japan. Her work weaves together layered percussion, minimal electronics, field recordings, and whisper-like vocals to create intimate soundscapes rooted in place, memory, and emotion.
Originally trained as a percussionist, her compositions reflect a deep sensitivity to rhythm and silence. Manami’s solo debut album was widely praised for its poetic restraint and tactile atmosphere, and she continues to perform internationally, often in unconventional venues that heighten the intimacy of her sound.
She is also active in collaborations across disciplines, including dance, theatre, and culinary art, with a focus on creating shared sensory experiences.
At Modja Modja House, we offer international artists a quiet place to slow down, reflect, and deepen their creative practice within Margate’s inspiring coastal setting.
Japanese percussionist and composer Manami Kakudo will make the house her creative sanctuary during this residency. Drawing inspiration from the ebb and flow of the seaside rhythms, as well as the serene atmosphere of Margate, Manami explores the delicate balance between sound and silence, repetition and improvisation — key themes that resonate throughout her music.
Her time at Modja Modja House is a period of exploration and dialogue between place, process, and performance. This residency will also include a unique live dining experience in collaboration with Faith In Strangers, where Manami’s seven original compositions accompany a specially crafted seven-course tasting menu — a rare moment where music and food intertwine in harmony.
As part of the residency, Manami will present a special sound and food collaboration event on 15 July at Faith In Strangers, offering guests an immersive, multi-sensory evening that brings together her sonic world and shared culinary experiences.
Please join us for this unique encounter — a fleeting but meaningful exchange between Margate and Japan. >More
