A one-night collaboration with Japanese percussionist Manami Kakudo.
Seven courses and seven live compositions, unfolding as the sun sets over Margate.
Tuesday 15th July 2025, 8pm
Modja Modja House and Faith In Strangers present an intimate evening of food and live composition as renowned Japanese percussionist and composer Manami Kakudo (live) makes a rare UK appearance, joining head chef Jackson Berg at Faith In Strangers. Her visit marks a special moment for British audiences — an opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most distinctive contemporary voices in an unusually close and personal setting.
Fresh from major performances with full orchestras across Japan, Kakudo is in the UK for a brief visit. During her stay, she is artist-in-residence at Modja Modja House, where she will create a new body of percussive work inspired by the surroundings, the town, and the rhythm of daily life. For this rare appearance in Margate, she performs seven of these original compositions — each following a dish — forming a sequence of flavour and sound, plated and performed in rhythm. Not background music, but a shared sensory experience.
The menu has been created exclusively for this event by Jackson Berg — formerly of St. John, Bistrotheque, and The Goods Shed, and now head chef at Faith In Strangers — known for his restrained, elegant cooking. Each piece is served as part of a refined tasting menu, with individual plates presented to guests seated together around a single communal table. You’ll dine among fellow strangers, gathered in shared presence — a quiet nod to the name, and to the act of placing faith in unfamiliar company.

Tuesday doesn’t usually sound like this.
Manami Kakudo is a Tokyo-born musician and percussionist whose compositions explore repetition, rhythm, and the space between sounds. Her performances are minimalist and expressive, grounded in the physicality of live percussion.
For this event, Manami performs seven original works — each carefully timed to accompany the meal, forming a meditative rhythm that flows with the evening.
Located just a short walk from the sea, Modja Modja House is a Japanese-inspired guest house and creative space in Margate.
We host visiting artists, musicians, and designers as part of an evolving residency programme — offering them a place to slow down, make work, and connect with the town’s cultural community.
Manami Kakudo is currently in residence at Modja Modja House, and this dinner marks the beginning of her time here — a one-night-only event in collaboration with Faith In Strangers.
